“Come and listen to our story about Tony Bartalone. He was living in L.A. and was feeling like a phony. Frustrated with life, didn’t know what he could be. So he grabbed a microphone and started comedy…”

Thus begins The Red Herring’s parody of The Beverly Hillbillies theme song written by standup comedian Tony Bartalone, whom we met via The Rad News Sketch Show. Tony is launching a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for his tour across America, the purpose of which is to film a documentary on open mics entitled “The Open Road.”

The Red Herring will be back at Bang.Studio, 457 N. Fairfax Ave., Los Angeles, CA, 90036 this Saturday for The Open Road Show featuring a night of standup comedy performances by Sean Patton, Jen Kober, Dave Ross, Mr. Goodnight , Brandie Posey and Ron Babcock with guest hosts Abraham Ramirez and Tony Bartolone. ($5 at the door).

We were happy to record our little jingle for Tony at Brooks Court (not to be confused with Brooke’s Court) with Alejandro Spreanza. You’ll be able to hear it first and see the incredible promotional video during this Saturday’s show. The video features endorsements by Orlando Jones and Maria Bamford among others. You may even recognize one of the hobos in the opening sequence!

Special thanks to Sonia and Ko at Second Street Jazz for hosting our commemorative kick off of Tony’s tour on June 1st. We did a secret acoustic performance of silly songs and experimental b-sides with a special appearance by Tony himself! Songs from Chasing Windmills will appear in his documentary which will be screened in film festivals across the country. For updates on Tony’s project “like” The Open Road’s FB page at http://www.facebook.com/#!/theopenroadmovie

And if you think that’s hot, we’re just getting warmed up! Brooke Trout will be participating in a charity chili cook off! Earlier this year she made her foray into the world of crock pot cooking and is excited to cook for a cause! The Hidden Chateau & Gardens located at 23130 Sherman Way Los Angeles, CA 91307, is hosting this special event at its monthly Artisan’s Market on June 24th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The proceeds will benefit the Guadalupe Center Food Pantry!

Speaking of causes our good friend Nette Conlon of Nette Radio is going legit! She has been doing monthly fundraiser concerts for years and is raising the funds she needs to form her very own nonprofit! Brooke will be performing an acoustic set at this fundraiser event at The Talking Stick, 1411-C Lincoln (@ California) in Venice this Friday! ($5 donation cover at the door). http://www.netteradio.com/

Lest we forget music updates! We were excited to discover that The Red Herring had our first rock blocks on the world famous WUML in Lowell, MA! Special thanks to David Gallo for spinning a Chasing Windmills segment on his distinguished show Moustache For Men! Wax, now twirl. DJ B-Dicks played us on Junk & Stuff to kick off June with “I Am The Night” and “Instigate.” Special thanks also to the King! That is, Greg Ragnio of Live From the Fallout Shelter! Greg played The Red Herring’s “Ark Of The Covenant” on this heralded program. Live From The Fallout Shelter has previously featured live performances by such guests as The Pixies who featured their setlist in SPIN Magazine! Also a big thank you WRUW 91.1 FM in Cleveland, OH for spinning The Red Herring’s “Albert II,” the tragic tale about the first monkey to successfully orbit the earth only to crash land! Keep calling in to your local radio stations and request your favorite tracks!

As a recap of last month the last Rad News Sketch Show was a success with Big Dave’s performance as Newt Gingrich and Brooke Trout’s Bono In Mono sketch featuring guest host Richard Lucas getting great laughs. The show is currently on hiatus until August when we come back with a whole new format and The Red Herring back to track the shenanigans!
