Chasing Windmills New Album & Release Party
Posted in Blog by Brooke Trout
January 15th marks the official release date of our debut album Chasing Windmills on CDBaby.com where you will be able to download digitally or purchase the physical album. Our CD Release Party at 2nd Street Jazz, aka The Cocaine in Little Tokyo, is the suspiciously auspicious date Friday the 13th this week!
Big Dave, Brooke Trout and Vincent Perea are not The Red Herring. The Red Herring is a fish. Chasing Windmills, the debut release from this Los Angeles based trio, is an angry album filled with original blues and indie rock. The EP was recorded at Musician’s Institute in Hollywood by Dan Hughley of Crazyville Productions. The song Albert II is a space rock story in the style of Cream, about the first monkey to successfully orbit the Earth only to crash land. The Well, is a blues rock duet with Big Dave and Brooke Trout that sounds like a Pink Floyd sundae with ZZ Topping. The other two tracks on the EP include the raucous Mad Tea Party which has been compared to songs by Pixies and Hole, and Instigate which has been compared to Suburban Lawns.
The rest of Chasing Windmills was recorded at the historic 4th Street Recording studio in Santa Monica by Sejo Navajas (Cold Blue Rebels, The People’s Party) and mixed by Denise Barbarita (The Roots, Stevie Wonder). Lyrically, the album provokes emotional recall on the somber ballad Terminal and the punk anthem Instigate: “All these emotions but you just want hate/It’s not fair/You start a fire but you short your flair/Escalate.” I Am The Night and Company Man are furious tales of the wandering anti-hero: “I took a ride outside my moral jurisdiction/I did some things a man should never share with pride.” Chasing Windmills explores the themes of nature versus man on Cities Under Siege and Ark of the Covenant: “Whenever knowledge is abused/by a tyrant or some other swine/They will try to get the people to step in line.”

We loved ringing in the new year at the nautically appropriate Red Handed benefit fundraiser. The New Years Eve Winter-Weenie-Party at the Redhanded Artisan Shoppe in the beautiful Topanga Canyon was something of a Treble Hooks & Anchormen reunion. Mike Dill was in from New Orleans and the wonderful Americana jamboree sounds of Squeezebox Sam on accordion, Big Dave on harmonica, and Rich Marchetta and Mike Dill on slide guitar made you feel like you were instantly transported to The French Quarter. Los Moondogs, The Red Herring, GRIT, Los Perros Perdidos, My Half Ridden Dream, and Alex Schmauss also performed. The benefit was a success and we are looking forward to continued support of this artist commune.
