The Red Herring loves New York! We enjoyed charting for two weeks on WPNR in Utica, as well as getting play on WMVL in Purchase and WCVM in Morrisville. We achieved radio play for our debut album Chasing Windmills coast to coast, making playlists at WPPJ AM in Pittsburgh, PA, WRNR in Annapolis, MD, KUNM in Albuquerque, NM, WXDU in Durham, NC and KMNR in Rolla, MO. We also charted again on WXIN in Providence, RI and are still holding on the Los Angeles indie rock charts for The Deli Magazine. Call in to your local radio stations and request your favorite tracks! If you’re here in Cali you can also support your local record store by picking up a copy of our album Chasing Windmills at Ameoba Records in Hollywood under the New Rock category. Our album is also now available at Sacramento’s own Dimple Records! And if you aren’t in California you can still get a physical or digital copy at CDBaby.com and iTunes. We are excited to announce that our music is also now available at more vendors online including Tower Records, Best Buy and Billboard!

You can catch our final performance as house band for the Rad News Sketch Show this weekend at the Bang Theatre on 457 N. Fairfax Ave., Los Angeles, CA, 90036. We have come to the end of our residency for the troupe. It was a blast participating in sketches, commercials, musical performances and parodies and we are grateful for the experience. $5 Tickets at the door for a brand new show! Starts at 8 p.m. prime time!

The Red Herring loves New York! We enjoyed charting for two weeks on WPNR in Utica, as well as getting play on WMVL in Purchase and WCVM in Morrisville. Hard to believe it’s been a month already since The Red Herring released Chasing Windmills. We achieved radio play for the album coast to coast, making playlists at WPPJ AM in Pittsburgh, PA, WRNR in Annapolis, MD and KMNR in Rolla, MO. We also charted again on WXIN in Providence, RI and are still holding on the Los Angeles indie rock charts for The Deli Magazine.

Many of you have asked us which of our songs is getting the most airplay. It’s an interesting question and we’re tickled to say that we’re getting a pretty even mix so far! KUNM in Albuquerque, NM played “Company Man” and “Terminal.” WXDU in Durham, NC played “Cities Under Seige.” WCVM played “Valhalla.” So what is your favorite song from Chasing Windmills? Call in to your local radio stations and request your favorite tracks! If you’re here in Cali you can also support your local record store by picking up a copy of Chasing Windmills at Ameoba Records in Hollywood under the New Rock category. Our album is also now available at Sacramento’s own Dimple Records! And if you aren’t in California you can still get a physical or digital copy at CDBaby.com and iTunes.

We had a lot to celebrate last month! After our CD Release show we met the illustrious DJ Disco Penguin. The Red Herring played a seriously seminal rock show with Distopian Dream Girl, Sketch Orchestra and Disco Penguin at the historic Old Towne Pub last month. We loved getting the chance to work with this incredible crew for a high energy night filled with original hard core shoegazin that yes, melted faces! We wanted to thank everyone who made it out to that show and can’t wait to rock it out again in Pasadena!

We also want to congratulate 4th Street Recording for their plug in The Hollywood Reporter! The Red Herring were honored to record Chasing Windmills at this “Temple of Sound” in Santa Monica with Sejo Navajas (Cold Blue Rebels, The People’s Party) and Denise Barbarita (The Roots, Stevie Wonder).

We are also grateful for our first west coast review of Chasing Windmills by William Phoenix of The LA Music Examiner who wrote, “The threesome demonstrate their individual talents including but not limited to Dave Perea’s ever-present, often haunting ‘dead man’s’ harmonica, Vincent Perea’s frequent pounding percussion and Trout’s versatile vocals. If The Red Herring keep rockin’ like this they just may find their music taking the world’s ‘cities under siege’.”

Last but not least we wanted to thank everyone for donating to Team Koko! Big Dave and Brooke Trout walked to beat the pancreatic cancer blues in The Lustgarten Foundation’s Westlake Village 5K . Thanks to your help we managed to double our goal and raised $555. The walk at large raised over 100K. 100% of the funds raised went straight to research because the event was sponsored by Cablevision. We enjoyed the challenge so much we’re taking it on again in April in support of Northridge Hospital’s Center for Assault Treatment Services (CATS).

The Red Herring debut album Chasing Windmills showed a strong first month thanks to your support! It hasn’t even been a month since our release on CDBaby.com and iTunes and we’re blown away by how far we’ve come.

We are currently charting on the Los Angeles Indie Rock charts for The Deli Magazine. Brooke Trout was particularly tickled to be on the chart with Stone Temple Pilots and had to reflect on this as a true coming of age! A year after Brooke started playing guitar seriously at the age of 15 she sacrificed the chance to go see STP in concert in Missoula, Montana in favor of buying her first electric guitar that was in a bidding war at Music One Workshop in Kalispell, Montana where she grew up getting guitar lessons; a red Peavey electric with a whammy bar. Brooke was a huge fan of Wayne’s World at the time so made sure to covet the guitar by saying, “It will be mine. Oh yes. It will be mine.” When Brooke finally got the chance to pay it was in a full spread of 10 twenty dollar bills she pulled out from behind her back as she exclaimed, “Do you accept cash? Cha-Ching!” It was truly a “sound” investment!

It’s been a big month for The Red Herring east side too! We enjoyed making a playlist for Fly By Night Radio with Doc Mordechi on WHRW in Bighamton, New York with the likes of some of our biggest influences including Tom Waitts, Elvis Costello and David Bowie. We are also grateful for an incredible review of Chasing Windmills by Joe Mullin of WSBU FM in St. Bonaventure, New York who wrote, “Blues are a dying art and I’m happy to say The Red Herring are innovating and bringing more music to the table.” Check out our entire first official review!

Chasing Windmills was produced in part by a Man Grant from Dockers.com. Following a tradition of philanthropy inspired by German immigrant and company founder Levi Strauss, The Man Grant is issued through The Wear the Pants Project which, “Gives men the resources and inspiration they need to finally do something great.” The Man Grant award was used to produce four original songs by The Red Herring at Musician’s Institute in Hollywood by Dan Hughley of Crazyville Productions. The rest of Chasing Windmills was recorded at the historic 4th Street Recording studio in Santa Monica by Sejo Navajas (Cold Blue Rebels, The People’s Party) and mixed by Denise Barbarita (The Roots, Stevie Wonder). Thank you to everyone who has supported us by requesting your favorite tracks from the album on your local radio stations!

If you are based here in Los Angeles we would like to offer you the chance for a FREE DOWNLOAD of our song “I Am The Night!” To enable downloading you will have to install the Hard Rock Rising 2012 application on your facebook profile. If you like what you hear support your local record store by picking up a copy of Chasing Windmills at Ameoba Records in Hollywood under the New Rock category.

Next Saturday Big Dave and Brooke Trout are walking as part of Team Koko to beat the pancreatic cancer blues in The Lustgarten Foundation’s Westlake Village 5K fundraiser walk. Koko is the name of Big Dave’s Fender Blues Junior Amp, named after the late great blues vocalist Koko Taylor. Koko was the inspiration for our team name and we soon learned that the blues music community has been deeply affected by pancreatic cancer with the loss of BB King‘s inspiration and cousin The Great Bukka White who left us too soon. We too have lost loved ones to cancer and are honored to participate in this year’s fundraiser for pancreatic cancer research. We are also proud to announce that we have doubled our fundraising goal thanks to your generous contributions to the cause! If you would like to support or join our team please register and/or make a donation at: Team Koko

Chasing Windmills Reviews: We love to hear what you think of our new album so send us your thoughts and you might see your review here next month!

‎”Sounds like some good ole kick ass rock and roll to me…I hear ACDC influence” – Dan in California

“I listened to the cuts from your new album on CDBaby. I really loved ‘Cities under Siege.’ I can’t get it out of my head. The song reminds me of The Doors.” -Lee in Oregon

“I Love Brooke Trout’s voice! She sounds like a punk Nancy Sinatra. My favorite tracks from Chasing Windmills are ‘Cities Under Seige’ and ‘Company Man’!” – Kathy in Montana

UPCOMING EVENTS:

February 11th at 9:15 a.m.– Westlake Village Fundraiser Walk

Brooke Trout and Big Dave are walking to beat the pancreatic cancer blues as Team Koko for the Lustgarten Foundation’s Pancreatic Cancer Research Walk & Run at Westlake Village City Hall, 31200 Oak Crest Drive, Westlake Village, CA 91361. This 5K Walk/Run begins at 9:15 am. Live music, food, community expo and fun for the whole family!

The Red Herring had the chance to participate in last year’s Artwalk for the city of Canoga Park and we regret we had to pass on the chance to play the Be My Baby Boutique and Food Truck Frolick because well, we’re going to be awful sore from our fundraiser walk the day before! BUT we want to invite you to come chow down with us, hang out with good folk to hear live music and support the local arts at The Hidden Chateau and Gardens, 23130 Sherman Way, West Hills, CA 91307.

January 15, 2012 (Los Angeles, CA) — The Los Angeles based indie blues rock trio The Red Herring release their 10 track debut album Chasing Windmills today on CDBaby.com for physical and digital purchase of $12.97 at http://cdbaby.com/cd/theredherring2.

“‎The Red Herring is officially the unofficial Dockers band. Loving Albert!” -Dockers Official Facebook Page. Chasing Windmills was produced in part by a Man Grant from Dockers.com. Following a tradtion of philanthropy inspired by German immigrant and company founder Levi Strauss, The Man Grant is issued through The Wear the Pants Project which, “Gives men the resources and inspiration they need to finally do something great.“ The Man Grant award was used to produce four original songs by The Red Herring at Musician’s Institute in Hollywood by Dan Hughley of Crazyville Productions. The rest of Chasing Windmills was recorded at the historic 4th Street Recording studio in Santa Monica by Sejo Navajas (Cold Blue Rebels, The People’s Party) and mixed by Denise Barbarita (The Roots, Stevie Wonder).

Big Dave, Brooke Trout and Vincent Perea are not The Red Herring. The Red Herring is a fish. Armed only with a guitar, harmonica and drum kit, the band has already played some of the hottest venues on the historic Sunset Strip including The House of Blues and The Viper Room. The Red Herring achieved number 3 of 75 bands with over 600 votes during Eventful.com’s battle of the bands and won their contest to perform at The Roxy. In the year and a half since the band’s formation, The Red Herring has played at not only popular clubs but also for charitable causes including Nette Radio’s annual Nette for Vets book drive, the Westlake Village benefit for the My Stuff Bags Foundation for neglected and abused children and a benefit for The Red Handed art commune in Topanga Canyon. Big Dave, former band leader of the blues band The Dirty Liars began performing with Alternative darling Brooke Trout as one of her Anchormen. Now the two have joined forces with drummer (and Big Dave’s Brother) Vincent to form The Red Herring. Most recently the band has become the first featured musical act and house band for The Late Night Rad News Sketch Show, a political comedy troupe at Bang. Theatre in Los Angeles. “On stage The Red Herring projects a really controlled cool presence.” -Lizzie Czerner, The Late Night Rad News Sketch Show

January 15th marks the official release date of our debut album Chasing Windmills on CDBaby.com where you will be able to download digitally or purchase the physical album. Our CD Release Party at 2nd Street Jazz, aka The Cocaine in Little Tokyo, is the suspiciously auspicious date Friday the 13th this week!

Big Dave, Brooke Trout and Vincent Perea are not The Red Herring. The Red Herring is a fish. Chasing Windmills, the debut release from this Los Angeles based trio, is an angry album filled with original blues and indie rock. “‎The Red Herring is officially the unofficial Dockers band. Loving Albert!” -Dockers Official Facebook Page. Thanks to a Valentine’s Day love letter that Big Dave wrote to Brooke Trout the band was awarded a Man Grant from Dockers.com that granted them the ability to record nearly half of Chasing Windmills. These four songs were recorded at Musician’s Institute in Hollywood by Dan Hughley of Crazyville Productions. Albert II is a space rock story in the style of Cream, about the first monkey to successfully orbit the Earth only to crash land. The album’s only explicit lyric warning track, The Well, is a blues rock duet with Big Dave and Brooke Trout that sounds like a Pink Floyd sundae with ZZ Topping. “Listen to ‘The Well’; then listen to Muddy Waters’ ‘Tom Cat’ from the Electric Mud LP. Then tell me what you hear.” –Manuel P. The other two tracks include the raucous Mad Tea Party which has been compared to songs by Pixies and Hole, and Instigate which has been compared to Suburban Lawns.

The rest of Chasing Windmills was recorded at the historic 4th Street Recording studio in Santa Monica by Sejo Navajas (Cold Blue Rebels, The People’s Party) and mixed by Denise Barbarita (The Roots, Stevie Wonder). Lyrically, the album provokes emotional recall on the somber ballad Terminal and the punk anthem Instigate: “All these emotions but you just want hate/It’s not fair/You start a fire but you short your flair/Escalate.” I Am The Night and Company Man are furious tales of the wandering anti-hero: “I took a ride outside my moral jurisdiction/I did some things a man should never share with pride.” Chasing Windmills explores the themes of nature versus man on Cities Under Siege and Ark of the Covenant: “Whenever knowledge is abused/by a tyrant or some other swine/They will try to get the people to step in line.”

We are starting the new year with a Bang! We are now the official house band of The Late Night Rad News Sketch Show at Bang.Studio, 457 N. Fairfax Ave., Los Angeles, CA, 90036. Expect to see more music and comedy antics from us in 2012 as we branch out into this arena. Directed/Produced by Lizzie Czerner, this is a political sketch comedy show in the SNL format; complete with fake commercials, fake news, digital shorts, live musical guests and a host! For more information check out www.radnews.biz and click like on the facebook page to get rad news updates!

We loved ringing in the new year at the nautically appropriate Red Handed benefit fundraiser. The New Years Eve Winter-Weenie-Party at the Redhanded Artisan Shoppe in the beautiful Topanga Canyon was something of a Treble Hooks & Anchormen reunion. Mike Dill was in from New Orleans and the wonderful Americana jamboree sounds of Squeezebox Sam on accordion, Big Dave on harmonica, and Rich Marchetta and Mike Dill on slide guitar made you feel like you were instantly transported to The French Quarter. Los Moondogs, The Red Herring, GRIT, Los Perros Perdidos, My Half Ridden Dream, and Alex Schmauss also performed. The benefit was a success and we are looking forward to continued support of this artist commune.

The Red Herring will be the first featured band to perform for the premiere of The Late Night Rad News Sketch Show on December 3rd at 10:30 p.m. at Bang.Studio, 457 N. Fairfax Ave., Los Angeles, CA, 90036 where you can anticipate the reemergence of Big Dave’s mad comedic skilz in a risqué fake commercial! We just had our dress rehearsal over the holiday weekend where we got a sneak peak at the hilarity that is to come and are totally pumped and honored to be joining this incredible cast and crew.

Directed/Produced by Lizzie Czerner, The Late Night Rad News Sketch Show is a political sketch comedy show in the SNL format: Complete with fake commercials, fake news, digital short, live musical guest and host! Musical guest THE RED HERRING, digital short by MC DIRT NAP AND THE CASKET CREW, fake commercial by Bill Forster / Jim Sorenson, with guest star MITCHELL ROCHE and special guest host Emmy Award winner PETER MURRIETA (founder of Bang Comedy Theater, Writer, Executive Producer on shows for Cartoon Network, Disney & The WB.) For more information check out www.radnews.biz and click like on the facebook page to get rad news updates!

Brooke Trout and Big Dave were happy to perform an acoustic set for Nette for Vet’s Book Drive at The Talking Stick in Santa Monica. You can check out the performance 6 minutes into part two of the ustream archive: http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/18465743. We even had Gary McGrath join us up on stage for a blues jam on Muddy Waters’ “I’m Ready.” Thanks to everyone in attendance Nette was able to raise funds and collect 110 books for a local veteran’s hospital! Her next event is another annual favorite at The Talking Stick on December 9th so mark your calendars! It’s a Toy’s For Tots show and admission is a new unwrapped toy! http://nrt4t.eventbrite.com/

The Red Herring got its first radio play for our pending full album release on Nette Radio for our song “Instigate” to rave reviews. You can get your own copy of the song and check out the other songs from our EP on Itunes, CDBaby and several other digital vendors online! The Red Herring’s debut EP features the engineering mastery of Dan Hughley of Crazyville Productions. The four tracks on the EP include “Albert II” – about the first monkey to successfully orbit the Earth only to crash land. “The Well” is like a Pink Floyd sundae with ZZ topping; a blues rock duet with Big Dave and Brooke Trout. The other tracks include the raucous “Mad Tea Party” which has been compared to songs by Hole, and “Instigate” which has been compared to Suburban Lawns.

We just finished our mastering for the full album release thanks to Ryan Clement at Mix Makers. Our awesome album artwork by our resident illustrator and drummer Vincent Perea has just been approved and we are now awaiting the physical copies of the album to be manufactured. Special thanks to Ian McNulty and Stephen Bennett over at Nationwide Disc in Texas for helping us get that going!

Although we do not endorse the throwing of fish without the support of a net, we do love the new muppet movie!

157 of you expressed interest in our Kickstarter campaign to raise funds to complete The Red Herring debut album. Special thanks to Women’s Radio Music Review, NetteRadio Daily Edition and Dockers for helping us spread the word! We were really grateful for all of you who came forward to show support.
The other tracks include the raucous “Mad Tea Party” which is already being compared to songs by Hole, and “Instigate” which has been compared to Suburban Lawns. You can catch our four song release for a $3.99 download on Itunes, CDBaby and several other digital vendors online or come to our next show and get the sticker!

We have moved on to the post production phase of our album after our marathon recording and mixing sessions into the wee hours of the morning at 4th Street Recording studio in October. 4th Street Recording is known for a unique architecture that produces an incredible richness of sound you can hear on the Gold & Platinum records of several artists who have recorded there including The Beach Boys, George Clinton, No Doubt, Fiona Apple, Hoobastank, Incubus and Nelly Furtado. We want to thank recording engineer Sejo Navajas (Cold Blue Rebels, The People’s Party), mixing engineer Denise Barbarita (The Roots, Stevie Wonder), Ray Palen and Kathleen Wirt for all of their hard work and support! We had so much fun with this team and can’t wait for everyone to hear and see the final product!

When foil panties were thrown on stage at our last show we knew we were the real potato. That is, it was a supervillian’s delight down at The Stardust in Downey where we began filming our first music video for our Red Herring original “I Am The Night” with director Carrie Certa and photographer Drea Molina. We had so much fun dancing and rocking out with those of you who joined us for the celebration! Special thanks to Sonia Hernandez and Carlos Lanza for the opportunities!

We have so much to look forward to as we launch our press and radio campaign for our full album release in January! We are excited to announce Ali Kravitz of Full Fathom Designs is creating a line of awesome Red Herring T-Shirts which you will be able to purchase at some of our future events! We also can’t wait to see you at our first appearance on a sketch comedy show! We will be the first featured band to perform for The Late Night Rad News Sketch Show on December 3rd at Bang.Studio 457 N. Fairfax Ave., Los Angeles, CA, 90036 where you can anticipate the reemergence of Big Dave’s mad comedic skilz!

Remember, we are not The Red Herring. The Red Herring is a fish. Thank you for supporting original rock & roll music!
